Weak Christians

2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV But HE said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Have you ever thought of yourself as a weak Christian? Most of us probably have. For most people, it is human nature to examine ourselves in different aspects of our life and identify where we think we fall short. The truth is, we are all weak Christians. 1 John 1:8 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

Sometimes we get too focused on ourselves, our works, our knowledge, or our own understanding of a Christian lifestyle. Being a strong Christian or a weak Christian is not the point of Christianity. The point of Christianity is JESUS CHRIST and only JESUS CHRIST. Christianity is simply denying ourselves and striving to become more like JESUS CHRIST every single day (Matthew 16:24).

In 2 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul illustrates this very idea. In 2 Corinthians 11:30 Paul writes, “If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.”

Paul had many things that he could boast about during his discipleship. However, he writes, “…in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Just like the children’s song, Jesus Loves Me. We are weak, but He is strong. Let us not boast in ourselves. Boast only in HIM. He is the one that makes us strong.
